FAQs about our upholstery services
Whether it is designing and constructing new custom upholstery, or using our talents to reupholster your favorite piece of upholstery, The Sofa Guy can help you.
How much does it cost to reupholster?
The best way for us to determine the cost of reupholstering is to email a photo and brief description to info@thesofaguy.com and we can give you a quote.
A starting point for a basic 7-8ft sofa, using the existing cushion fill inserts with 20 yards of new fabric is about $1,795 plus tax, pick up and delivery. This assumes fabric cost is $20 a yard. If all new inserts are needed, (which mostly they are), and a more expensive fabric is chosen, (which mostly it is), the price will increase.
Should we reupholster or buy new?
This is the number 1 most often asked question.
Often that comes down to a cost benefit analysis. Most people are concerned with what is most cost effective. We go over all the variables and create an estimate for every client’s unique situation. All we need is a photo and brief description, reupholstering is a wonderful way to create a fresh look while retaining the classic design you have always loved.
It is a personal choice as to what is the best value. While in some instances, it may cost more to reupholster, we have found that the emotional and aesthetic value may outweigh any monetary value.
On average, clients who have purchased high quality pieces years ago are the best candidates for reupholstering. These clients balance their desire for fresh aesthetic with their classic values about sustainability.
What is the process of reupholstering?
The process is extensive. We strip the furniture to the frame. Before we begin the re-upholstery process all woodwork, springs, fillings, webbing and padding are thoroughly inspected. We replace any foam or dacron padding used around the frame, we also do any minor repairs as needed. Our clients receive a pristine piece of upholstery inside and out.
How long does it take to reupholster?
Our reupholstering department has a fast turn around. After the fabric is selected and received, it generally takes about 2-4 weeks to complete the re-upholstering process.
Do you make custom slipcovers?
Yes, we make custom slipcovers perfectly fitted to your piece of furniture. Once we have the fabric, we go to your home with the fabric, make a template, take it to our workshop for sewing then bring it back and place it on your furniture. It’s great value, and your pieces stay in your home while we do the work.
Do you pick up and deliver?
We have options for pick up and delivery. The fees will vary depending on job and location.
Do you repair furniture?
We do not repair furniture. We focus our attention on helping our clients discover and design amazing new or existing pieces for their home. If you have need for repair here is a link for local repair around Thousand Oaks in Ventura County California

Can you match existing fabric?
It is highly unlikely, but stranger things have happened.
Do you work with leather?
Yes, leather is an amazing option. We can supply the classic analine died leather as well as distressed, embossed, metallic, hair on hide, and purely protected.
Leather comes in hides of all different sizes and is measured by square feet. On average each hide is equivalent to 50 square feet or about 3 yards of fabric. Rule of thumb is 1 fabric yard = 18 sq ft.
We have many suppliers of leather, such as Carroll Leather of North Carolina.
Can I use faux leather or vinyl?
Yes, the quality of faux leather has improved immensely over the years. It is much less expensive and easier to work with than real leather and measured by yards. We especially like using it for banquets, ottomans, dining chairs, and pieces that need frequent wipe up with wet cloth.
Do you reupholster antiquities?
We can and we have. Each piece is unique. And must be quoted separately and treated with great care.
